Palatine Accident Update — A pedestrian was fatally struck by a Metra commuter train near the Palatine Metra Station in Palatine, Illinois, on Sunday afternoon, prompting a major emergency response and causing significant service disruptions along the Union Pacific Northwest (UP-NW) Line.
According to Metra officials, the incident occurred at approximately 3:25 p.m. near the railroad crossing at Smith Street and Wood Street, adjacent to the Palatine station. An inbound Union Pacific Northwest Line train struck a woman as it approached the station.
Emergency responders, including local police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and Metra personnel, arrived at the scene shortly after the collision. Medical personnel provided emergency treatment before transporting the woman to a nearby hospital. Despite lifesaving efforts, she later died from her injuries.
Following the incident, Metra temporarily suspended train movements through the area while emergency crews secured the scene and investigators examined the circumstances surrounding the collision. The temporary closure resulted in delays for passengers travelling on the UP-NW Line as crews worked to safely resume rail operations.
Local police assisted with traffic control around the Smith Street and Wood Street crossing while investigators documented the scene. Authorities have not released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of her next of kin.
