Zardoya had traveled from New Jersey to Florida for a weekend visit with friends. According to a statement shared by her friend Victoria Silberbusch at the request of Zardoya’s family, the group was exploring the historic ruins of Fort Dade on Egmont Key when the accident occurred.

The group had been preparing to leave the site when Zardoya suffered a devastating fall on a set of stairs. Friends immediately responded, calling emergency services and working to reach her. Those with her on nearby boats also used flares to help first responders locate the group.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that its Marine Unit responded to Egmont Key on July 24, 2026, after receiving reports that someone had fallen from one of the structures. Authorities said the victim was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Zardoya later died on July 26, 2026, from injuries sustained in the fall. Friends who were with her during the incident said she was surrounded by people who cared for her and continued efforts to help her before emergency responders arrived.
